Theory, composition and conducting
The Department of Theory, Composition and Conducting manages the specific subjects in the area of composition, the teachers who give these subjects and the activities related to the disciplines of musical theory and composition.
This department has qualified teachers diversified with respect to aesthetics, styles, techniques, methods and focuses in the world of musical creation, classical composition, contemporary composition, jazz, electro acoustics and stage and audiovisual means. Throughout their studies, they will have learnt to write for a variety of instrumental groups (chamber, choir and orchestra), electro-acoustic and audiovisual means, and different applications of modern musical creation (concert, dance, theatre, cinema, television, sound assemblies, etc.).
The conducting studies in the Graduate School of Music of Catalonia introduce students to different techniques, languages and repertoires. Throughout their studies, they will have learnt to address, analyse and work on works with different languages and technical requirements, as well as a variety of instrumental or vocal groups (chamber, choir and orchestra), which prepares them to conduct in a large number of musical contexts and situations.
The department also wishes to provide conducting practice by working with choirs, groups, orchestras, concert seasons and institutions interested in carrying out joint activities that might be of use to students from a pedagogical and professional viewpoint.
In addition to the official studies for the degree, there is a selection of specialised courses for people who wish to deepen their study in aspects related to the area of theory and composition.
The department also helps in the first appearance, performance and recording of the students’ works and compositions as an essential tool for learning and developing the studies.
